Who this is for

  • Anyone who’s heard Seoul sits in a basin and wants to feel it for themselves
  • People who don’t want a real hike but do want a better view than a shopping street
  • Anyone tempted to set off at three on an autumn afternoon

Central Seoul was once ringed by a city wall. Much of it survives, and a path now runs alongside it.

What makes it interesting is that walking it teaches you the shape of the city. Here’s the thing: you feel, physically, that Seoul sits in a basin ringed by low mountains.

“Can I do the whole thing?” The full circuit is a long way, though—on a trip, one section is the realistic choice. Let’s get into it, starting with how to choose.

Hills or City Streets! Which Section to Take

✔ Hill sections mean stairs—and views
Sections crossing the hills involve climbing and plenty of steps, but the views open right out.

Sections through the city are flat, with shops and cafes along the way. They pass historic buildings and residential streets, so the walking is the sightseeing.

For a first walk, choose a section that starts and ends near metro stations. You can drop out if you tire.

A Morning Start Is Safer? Walking It in Autumn

✔ Autumn is the best season for it
The air is dry and the trees are turning.

But sunset comes early. Start at three in the afternoon and you may be coming down in the dark. A morning start is safer.

Mornings and evenings are cold, but you warm up quickly once moving. Layers you can shed work best.

The surface alternates between paving and stone steps, so wear shoes with grip. Wet leaves are slippery.

Water and Your Passport! What to Bring

✔ Water, always
Some sections have no shops along the way.

A hat and sunscreen still earn their place in autumn; parts of the wall have little shade.

Map apps can lose accuracy in places. Noting the station names at each end beforehand is worth the minute.

Some sections run near military installations, where access and photography are restricted. Follow the signs. A few sections ask for identification, so carrying your passport is sensible.

Save the Rest for Next Time! After the Walk

✔ Carrying on with a wander is the natural next step
Several sections come down into neighbourhoods with older streets, so keep walking.

If your legs have had enough, a Korean bathhouse is a reasonable way to end the day.

For photographs, get the wall and the city in the same frame so the place reads. Low, angled light brings out the stone.

And if you enjoy one section, save the others for a future trip. Not doing it all at once is what keeps it worth returning to. Pick the section nearest a metro station and start there.
