In three lines

  • Myeongdong sits between Myeongdong Station (Line 4; Exits 6 and 8 for Myeongdong-gil, Exit 3 for the Namsan cable car) and Euljiro 1-ga (Line 2; Exits 5-6 for the Lotte side). Namdaemun Market is Hoehyeon Station Exit 5 (Line 4), Deoksugung is City Hall Exit 2 (Lines 1/2), Seoullo 7017 starts at Seoul Station.

Who this is for

  • Anyone staying in Myeongdong who knows only the stalls and the cosmetics stores
  • People who want to walk to Namdaemun Market, Deoksugung and Namsan from Myeongdong
  • Anyone who wants the real picture, including why the old restaurants score low

Myeongdong is the neighborhood with more foreigners than anywhere else in Seoul. A million people a day walk streets lined with cosmetics stores, pharmacies, food stalls and money changers; to the south rise Namsan and N Seoul Tower, to the west is Namdaemun Market, trading since the Joseon era, and to the northwest, Deoksugung and City Hall plaza. Everything a tourist wants sits within a 1 km radius, which is exactly why it is hard to tell what is true here.

This guide cuts Myeongdong and Namdaemun into nine themes (sights, food, shopping, beauty, wellness, nature and walks, nightlife, play, art) and lists only places whose address, hours and rating we verified on Google Maps. The old restaurants score modestly (3.8–4.2), because heavy tourist traffic splits opinion. We give the numbers and the reasons behind them.

“So how has Myeongdong changed in 2026?” Here’s the thing: the post-pandemic vacancies have mostly filled, and foreign spending has shifted from buying cosmetics to getting treatments—dermatology now accounts for 63% of foreign card payments in the district. On Namsan, a gondola is under construction beside the cable car, and Namdaemun Market still closes on Sunday. Here is the district as it is now, exit by exit. Let’s get into it.

Three Minutes From Noise to Quiet! Sights and History: Myeongdong Cathedral, Deoksugung, Namdaemun Market and Sungnyemun

✔ Korea’s first Gothic cathedral, and free
Myeongdong Cathedral (명동대성당): 74 Myeongdong-gil, Jung-gu, 5 min from Myeongdong Station Exit 8 or 7 min from Euljiro 1-ga Exit 5. ★4.7 (10,173 reviews), free, daily 6:30 am–7:30 pm (Sunday to 10 pm). Completed in 1898 as Korea’s first Gothic cathedral, it sheltered the democracy movement in the 1970s and 80s. The underground arcade “1898 Plaza” has cafes and a bookshop, and there is an English-language Mass (check the official site for times). Three minutes from the noise of Myeongdong-gil into this quiet is the neighborhood’s strangest trick.

Deoksugung (덕수궁): 99 Sejong-daero, Jung-gu, right at City Hall Station Exit 2. ★4.6 (20,391 reviews), 9 am-9 pm (last entry 8 pm), closed Monday, 1,000 won. The palace where Gojong, the last king of Joseon, lived, and the only one where a Western stone hall (the Daehan Empire History Museum) stands beside hanok. The royal guard changing ceremony at Daehanmun gate runs at 11 am, 2 pm and 3:30 pm (not Monday), free, 15 minutes. It stays open until 9 pm, so you can go for the illuminations after dinner in Myeongdong.

Namdaemun Market (남대문시장): 21 Namdaemunsijang 4-gil, Jung-gu, at Hoehyeon Station Exit 5. ★4.2 (28,336 reviews). Korea’s largest traditional market, dating to 1414 (the 14th year of King Taejong), with about 10,000 shops: wholesale streets for clothing, glasses, cameras, tableware and children’s wear, plus restaurant alleys for braised cutlassfish and kalguksu noodles. The shops run mainly weekdays 9 am-5 pm and close Sunday; the restaurants go to 10 pm. At the market’s south end, Sungnyemun (Namdaemun) is National Treasure No. 1, restored in 2013 after the 2008 fire: 9 am-6 pm, closed Monday, free.

Eat in Namdaemun, Shoot in Myeongdong! Food: Myeongdong Kyoja, the Cutlassfish Alley, Oxtail Soup, and Street-Stall Hours

✔ The taste has not changed in 40 years
Myeongdong Kyoja main branch (명동교자): 129 Toegye-ro, Jung-gu, 3 min from Myeongdong Station Exit 8. ★4.2 (14,769 reviews), 10:30 am–9 pm, open daily. Founded in 1966, it serves kalguksu (hand-cut noodles) in chicken broth and steamed dumplings, a regular on the Michelin Bib Gourmand list. Around 10,000 won, fast turnover, lines of about 15 minutes. The 4.2 reflects a split over “big portions, heavy garlic”; the taste has not changed in 40 years. Myeongdong Halmeoni Guksu main branch (명동할머니국수), ★4.2 (333 reviews), is the cheaper noodle option.

Namdaemun cutlassfish alley (갈치조림골목): 16-17 Namdaemunsijang-gil, 3 min from Hoehyeon Station Exit 5. ★4.0 (704 reviews), 10 am-10 pm. About ten restaurants serving braised cutlassfish (10,000-odd won per person), all similar. Eunho Sikdang main branch (은호식당): 50-42 Namchang-dong, ★3.8 (433 reviews), 6 am-9 pm (weekends to 4 pm). Oxtail soup (kkori gomtang) since 1932, one of the few old houses that works for breakfast. In the Namdaemun lanes, do not miss the vegetable hotteok (around 2,000 won) and barley-rice bibimbap.

Myeongdong’s street stalls spread along Myeongdong-gil from Myeongdong Station Exits 6 and 8, roughly 4 pm to 10 pm, with fewer stalls in rain and on Mondays. Under Jung-gu’s registration system there are about 350: tteokbokki, egg bread, cheese lobster, strawberry candy and more. At 5,000-15,000 won a portion they are not cheap, but more stalls now take cards. Honestly, the stalls cost more than the market. “Eat in Namdaemun, take photos in Myeongdong” is how locals use the area.

The department stores are Lotte Department Store main branch (81 Namdaemun-ro, ★4.2, 13,472 reviews, 10:30 am-8 pm, weekends to 8:30 pm) and Shinsegae main branch (63 Sogong-ro, ★4.3, 12,884 reviews). Lotte has its duty-free store in the same building; Shinsegae’s main building is the former Mitsukoshi Keijo store of 1930. Both have instant-refund counters for foreigners.

Namdaemun Market is the wholesale-price district: glasses (see our K-glasses tour), cameras, tableware, children’s clothes, hiking gear, dried goods and laver. In shops without price tags, ask first, and negotiate on bulk. Mainly weekdays 9 am-5 pm; most shops close Sunday, so shop Monday to Saturday mornings. Tax refunds are available only at participating stores (signposted), and most market shops do not offer them.

For cosmetics, Olive Young Myeongdong Town (★4.3) and Central Myeongdong Town (★5.0, 1,649 reviews), both with instant tax refunds (15,000 won or more per purchase). Myeongdong has hair salons, personal color analysis and nail shops too, but our hair salon and personal color articles verified shops mainly in Gangnam and Hongdae. If you are staying in Myeongdong, the 2026 split is: treatments here, hair in Gangnam.

Myeongdong has dozens of similar massage shops; use a rating of 4.5 or higher with 300 or more reviews as your filter. Looking one up on Google before going in beats following a tout.

Morning wellness means Namsan. Climb the Namsan Park stairs from Myeongdong Station Exit 3 and you will find Seoulites walking from 6 am. The northern loop road of Namsan Park (★4.7, 2,584 reviews) is a paved, car-free road, 40 minutes on foot to N Seoul Tower, an hour and a half round trip. The Stalls Vanish at 10 pm! Nightlife and Events: the Namsan View, the Bars off Myeongdong 8-gil

✔ After 10 pm, head for Myeongdong 8-gil
The street stalls vanish at 10 pm, and Myeongdong’s night moves to the bars around Myeongdong 8-gil. PUNGAK Myeongdong (풍악): 2F, 11-4 Myeongdong 8-gil, ★4.9 (291 reviews), 6 pm–2 am (Sunday from 7 pm). Korean traditional liquors (makgeolli, soju, medicinal wines) served in a modern style, English menu, 8,000–15,000 won a glass. Saenghwal Maekju Myeongdong (생활맥주): Myeongdong 7-gil, ★4.6 (671 reviews), 4 pm–1 am. A Korean craft-beer chain, best with fried chicken. Art Monster Myeongdong Station ★4.5 (137 reviews) is also craft beer.

For the night view, Namsan: the cable car runs to 11 pm, the N Seoul Tower plaza is free, and the lights come on after sunset. Deoksugung stays open until 9 pm, with the illuminated Seokjojeon hall and the City Hall plaza skyline within walking distance. The cathedral’s exterior at night is quiet and handsome. In winter (December-January) there are the illuminations on Myeongdong-gil and at Shinsegae, and the Seoul Plaza skating rink (adults 1,000 won).

Events: Myeongdong NANTA Theatre (UNESCO Hall, 26 Myeongdong-gil, ★4.5, 5,678 reviews) performs daily at 5 pm and 8 pm (subject to change), a non-verbal show of an hour and a half, 40,000-60,000 won. September-October brings Seoul Welcome Week and street events in Myeongdong; in October the Seoul International Fireworks Festival (Yeouido) fills every hotel in Myeongdong. The district is busy and safe late at night, but watch out for touts and overcharging bars.

Passport in Hand for Live Fire! Play and Sports: Shooting, NANTA, the Namsan Walking Routes

✔ One of the few places in Korea to fire live rounds legally
Myeongdong Shooting Range (명동실탄사격장): 3F Sunshine Building, 11-1 Chungmuro 2-ga, 3 min from Myeongdong Station Exit 6. ★4.4 (229 reviews), 11 am–7:30 pm. One of the few places in Korea to fire live ammunition legally: passport required, from 30,000–50,000 won for 10 rounds, instructor included. Popular with Japanese and Chinese visitors, with 30-minute waits on weekends.

NANTA (난타) counts as play too. A non-verbal performance that turns kitchen knives and chopping boards into percussion, running at the Myeongdong theater since 1997, and children stay entertained for the full hour and a half. Same-day tickets at the box office; advance bookings through Klook or the official site are discounted.

For sport, Namsan is the venue: Seoulites use the northern loop road (about 3.5 km, Hoehyeon Station to Namsan Library to the National Theater) for running and walking. Myeongdong has bowling, PC bangs and escape rooms as well, but few have enough Google reviews to judge; our escape room and PC bang articles feature venues in Hongdae and Gangnam.

The Permanent Collection Is Free! Art and Design: Seoul Museum of Art, Myeongdong Theater, the Stone Hall of Deoksugung

✔ Behind the 1928 facade of the old Supreme Court
Seoul Museum of Art, Seosomun main building (서울시립미술관): 61 Deoksugung-gil, Jung-gu, 5 min from City Hall Station Exit 1. ★4.6 (2,192 reviews), Tue–Fri 10 am–8 pm (Fri to 9 pm), weekends 10 am–7 pm, closed Monday, permanent collection free. The building keeps the 1928 facade of the former Supreme Court, and you reach it along the Deoksugung stone wall path. Four or five special exhibitions a year make it the best entry point to Korean contemporary art.

National Theater Company, Myeongdong Theater (명동예술극장): 35 Myeongdong-gil, ★4.7 (52 reviews). The Baroque-style former Meiji-za of 1936, the temple of Korean theater. Performances are in Korean, but the building alone is worth a look. The Seokjojeon hall at Deoksugung (Daehan Empire History Museum) is a neoclassical palace of 1910; interior tours are free by reservation. Next door, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung holds modern-art exhibitions (paid, closed Monday).

For design: the 645 planters and round benches of Seoullo 7017, the 1898 Plaza under Myeongdong Cathedral, the 1930s facade of the Shinsegae main building. Myeongdong is not an “art district”, but the kilometer from City Hall through Deoksugung to Jeong-dong is the densest walk of early modern architecture in Seoul.
