Seoul’s Longest Night, Cut Into 9 Themes! Hongdae and Yeonnam Area Guide—Busking Fri-Sat 6-10 pm, Beer on the Grass at Yeontral Park, 1,500-Won Croquettes at Mangwon Market, 24-Hour Coin Karaoke

In three lines

  • Hongdae centers on Hongik Univ. Station (Line 2, AREX airport railroad, Gyeongui-Jungang Line). Exit 9 for the main district (the Walking Street and the Playground park), Exit 3 for Yeontral Park in Yeonnam-dong. Mangwon (Line 6) Exit 2 for Mangwon Market, Hapjeong Exit 7 for the Hapjeong and Sangsu cafe streets, World Cup Stadium Exit 1 for Haneul Park.
  • The essentials: Gyeongui Line Forest Park (★4.5, 3,241 reviews, free), Hongdae Street (★4.6, 9,497), Mangwon Market (★4.3, 8,829, 9 am-9 pm) and Haneul Park (★4.5, 8,297, silver-grass festival mid-October). At night, Club FF (★4.9, 1,170, closed Tue-Wed) and Jebi Dabang (★4.5, 522, to 2 am).
  • Play is the best in Seoul: escape rooms (Deep Thinker ★5.0, 838, all themes in English), ActiveMode (★5.0, 703), self photo studios (Oddity Mode ★5.0, 732) and coin karaoke. Honestly, Hongdae has no decent sauna or spa; go to Dongdaemun for that.

Who this is for

  • Anyone stepping off the airport express and spending their first night in Hongdae
  • People who want busking, an indie club and an escape room in a single day
  • Anyone who knows Hongdae after dark but not Yeonnam and Mangwon by daylight

Hongdae grew out of the art school of Hongik University into the young people’s district of Seoul, and it’s where the lights go out last: busking on the Walking Street, indie clubs in basements, 24-hour coin karaoke, a convenience store “ramyeon library” open past midnight. Hongik Univ. Station, where Line 2, the AREX airport railroad and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line meet, is 43 minutes by express train from Incheon Airport and the first stop for many travelers.

North of it lies Yeonnam-dong and its Yeontral Park, a railway line turned park in 2016; south are the cafes and bars of Hapjeong and Sangsu; west are Mangwon Market and Mangwon Hangang Park, and Haneul Park in Sangam. Combine Hongdae by night with Yeonnam and Mangwon by day and the district fills a full 24 hours.

“So where do I start on night one?” Here’s the thing: this guide cuts Hongdae and Yeonnam into nine themes (sights, food, shopping, beauty, wellness, nature and walks, nightlife, play, art) and lists only places whose address, hours and rating we verified on Google Maps. To be candid, wellness (saunas, spas) is the district’s weak point and there’s no hiking nearby. That, too, is Hongdae in autumn 2026. Let’s get into it.

6.3 km of Railway Turned Park! Sights and History: Gyeongui Line Forest Park, the Walking Street, the Hongik Mural Street

✔ 6.3 km of surface track became a park
Gyeongui Line Forest Park (경의선숲길): 133 Donggyo-ro 51-gil, Mapo-gu, right at Hongik Univ. Station Exit 3. ★4.5 (3,241 reviews), free, 24 hours. The Gyeongui railway went underground in 2005 and its 6.3 km of surface track became a park in 2016; the Yeonnam-dong section (about 1.3 km) is nicknamed Yeontral Park (Yeonnam plus Central Park). People sit on the lawn with beer, old level crossings and sleepers remain, and cafes and restaurants line both sides. The Gyeongui Line Book Street (★4.4, 486 reviews) is the bookshop stretch on the Exit 6 side.

Hongdae Street (홍대거리): ★4.6 (9,497 reviews), south from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 9. The Walking Street (걷고싶은거리) and the Playground park (홍익문화공원) are the center of busking, where would-be singers and dance crews take turns on Friday and Saturday from 6 to 10 pm; tipping is optional. The Hongdae shopping street (★4.3, 10,268 reviews) runs from Exit 8 to the university’s main gate: cosmetics, clothes, accessories.

The Hongik mural street (벽화거리), up the slope to the left of the main gate, holds twenty years of murals by art students. KT&G Sangsang Madang (상상마당): 65 Eoulmadang-ro, ★4.1 (2,628 reviews), 11 am-9 pm. A gallery, an indie cinema, a design shop and a live hall in one building, the hub of Hongdae culture, whose basement hall is the proving ground of Korean indie music. In Hapjeong, Danginri Power Plant Park (★4.4, 54 reviews) has turned a 1930 thermal power station into a park and cultural venue.

Croquettes for 1,500 Won! Food: Mangwon Market, the Ramyeon Library, Thai Food in Yeonnam, Halal and Indonesian

✔ Cheaper than Gwangjang, and locals still shop here
Mangwon Market (망원시장): 27 Poeun-ro 6-gil, Mapo-gu, 7 min from Mangwon Station Exit 2. ★4.3 (8,829 reviews), 9 am-9 pm, open daily. A covered traditional market known for croquettes (around 1,500 won each), kalguksu noodles, fried snacks and rice cakes; it’s cheaper than the touristy Gwangjang Market, and locals still shop here. Mangridan-gil, south of the market, is a street of cafes and small restaurants.

CU Hongdae Ramyeon Library: 3 min from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 9. A convenience store stocking about 230 kinds of Korean instant noodles with in-store cookers, where 68% of customers are foreigners; 1,500-3,000 won a pack, 24 hours. The lanes of Hongdae hold hundreds of pork barbecue, fried chicken and pocha (tent-style pub) places; our Daiso-and-convenience-store and PC bang articles cover how to use them here.

Yeonnam-dong is the district of Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese food. Yeonnam Seo Sikdang (연남서식당), ★4.2 (1,447 reviews), is a barbecue house founded in 1953 on the old side of Yeonnam. For halal, Nusantaraku (★4.7, 154 reviews, Indonesian) and Busanjip Hongdae (부산집) (★4.7, 479 reviews, Muslim-friendly Korean food) are verified (see our halal food article). Honestly, Hongdae restaurants turn over fast; use ★4.5 and 100 reviews as your filter.

Younger and Cheaper Than Myeongdong? Shopping: The Shopping Street, the Flea Market, Yeonnam Objects, Olive Young

✔ Younger and cheaper than Myeongdong
The Hongdae shopping street (Exit 8 to the Hongik main gate, ★4.3, 10,268 reviews) lines up cheap cosmetics, clothes, shoes and accessories, younger and cheaper than Myeongdong. Olive Young has more than five branches in Hongdae (Hongdae Town ★4.3, 206 reviews; Hongdae Crossroads ★4.7, 154 reviews), with Daiso and Artbox (stationery and goods) by the station. All of them give instant tax refunds.

The Hongdae Free Market (홍대 프리마켓) at the Playground park runs on Saturdays 1-6 pm from March to November, a handmade market since 2002 where you buy accessories, illustrations and ceramics from the young makers themselves; cancelled in rain. The lanes of Yeonnam-dong hold independent stationers, vintage shops and record stores, and the Gyeongui Line Book Street has publisher-run bookshops.

Mangwon Market is a food and household market; for souvenirs, laver, rice cakes and dried goods. Hapjeong and Sangsu have many vintage clothing shops, more curated and pricier than Dongmyo (20,000-50,000 won a piece). Tax refunds are available only at large stores; the market, the flea market and vintage shops do not participate.

★4.9 and ★5.0 Salons That Book in English! Beauty and K-Care: Hair Salons, Self Photo Studios, Tarot, and Dermatology in Gangnam

✔ Beauty here means hair and photos
Beauty in Hongdae means hair and photos. The Days Hair (★4.9, 3,830 reviews) and Juno Hair Hongdae (준오헤어) (★5.0, 874 reviews) are the foreigner-friendly salons verified in our hair salon article: cuts 30,000-50,000 won, perms 100,000-200,000 won, bookings in English, Japanese and Chinese. Hongdae has one of the densest concentrations of salons in Korea, from cheap student shops to famous reservation-only ones.

Self photo studios were practically born here. Oddity Mode Hongdae 1 (오디티모드), ★5.0 (732 reviews), tops our self photo studio article, with hair-and-makeup profile shoots in the 100,000-won range. The Life Four Cuts (인생네컷) booths on every street cost 4,000-5,000 won a session, with photos saved by QR code for three days. Tarot is at home in Yeonnam and Hongdae: Neighborhood Witch (이웃집 마녀) (22 Yeonhui-ro 1-gil, ★4.9, 268 reviews) and Eros tarot (30 Hongik-ro 6-gil, ★4.7, 177 reviews) read in English (see our saju and tarot article).

Hongdae has dermatology clinics for lasers and skin boosters, but for a track record with foreign clients, Gangnam (30 minutes on Line 2) and Myeongdong are the safer choice. Cosmetics are covered by Hongdae’s five Olive Youngs with instant tax refunds. See our articles on the three big dermatology treatments and personal color analysis.

Sauna? Go to Dongdaemun. Wellness: Honestly Weak. Running the Forest Park and Cycling the River

✔ No sauna here we can recommend
Hongdae has no sauna or jjimjilbang we can recommend to foreign visitors; the one 24-hour sauna we could verify rates ★3.0 (98 reviews), and we don’t endorse it. For a proper jjimjilbang, go to Sparex in Dongdaemun (Line 2 to Euljiro 4-ga, then one stop to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park, about 20 minutes; 24 hours; ★4.0, 1,678 reviews) or the large spas in Yongsan. Details are in our “Jjimjilbang full course” article.

Instead, Hongdae’s wellness is outdoors. The Gyeongui Line Forest Park is a flat promenade from Yeonnam-dong to Gajwa Station, and 6-8 am belongs to runners. Mangwon Hangang Park (망원한강공원): 467 Maponaru-gil, 15 min on foot from Mangwon Station, ★4.5 (5,275 reviews), 24 hours. Ttareungyi public bikes ride to Yeouido (4 km west) or Nanji Hangang Park (3 km west). There is no outdoor pool here in summer (Nanji next door has a water play area).

Drop-in yoga and Pilates studios are plentiful in Hongdae and Yeonnam, though rarely in foreign languages. The 291 steps of Haneul Park are Sangam’s morning workout, with a 30-minute loop of the summit meadow. If you are staying in Hongdae and want to rest your body, a forest-park walk and an early night are the realistic answer.

Beer and Chicken on the Grass, Officially Fine! Nature and Walks: Yeontral Park, the Silver Grass of Haneul Park, Mangwon Hangang Park

✔ Beer and chicken on the grass is park-sanctioned
Yeontral Park (the Yeonnam section of the Gyeongui Line Forest Park) runs about 1.3 km northwest from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 3 to Gajwa Station. Cherry blossoms in early April, lawn picnics from May to October, cafe terraces on both sides. It’s busiest from 5 to 7 pm, and opening beer and fried chicken on the grass is a park-sanctioned custom (take your rubbish with you). Beyond Gajwa Station the route turns quiet and residential.

Haneul Park (하늘공원): 95 Haneulgongwon-ro, Mapo-gu, 20 min on foot from World Cup Stadium Station Exit 1 (291 steps, or the “Maengkkongi” electric cart, 3,000 won round trip). ★4.5 (8,297 reviews), free, sunrise to sunset (seasonal). The Nanjido landfill of 1978-93 became a park in 2002, and its 98 m plateau is a meadow of silver grass (억새); the Seoul Silver Grass Festival (mid to late October, with night openings) is a fixture of Seoul’s autumn. Nanji Hangang Park next door has a campsite and picnic grounds.

Mangwon Hangang Park (★4.5, 5,275 reviews) is the everyday river of Mapo’s residents: lawns and cycle paths, the Yeouido skyline across the water, convenience-store ramyeon. Gyeongui Line Forest Park to Mangwon Market to Mangwon Hangang Park makes a 90-minute afternoon on foot, the Hongdae version of our Hangang article.

The Night Has Three Layers! Nightlife and Events: Club FF, Live Bars, Busking, Late-Night Coin Karaoke

✔ Hongdae’s night has three layers
Hongdae’s night has three layers. The first is busking (the Walking Street and the Playground park, Fri-Sat 6-10 pm, free). The second is the live clubs: Club FF, 407-8 Seogyo-dong, Mapo-gu, 5 min from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 9. ★4.9 (1,170 reviews), Thu-Sun (closed Tue-Wed), live shows Thursday 6 pm-midnight, club nights Friday and Saturday from late night to 8 am, entry 10,000-20,000 won. The temple of Hongdae indie since 1996; Thursday is the night for rock. Unplugged Hongdae (언플러그드), ★4.7 (303 reviews), is an acoustic live bar; Club AOR, ★4.6 (95 reviews), is rock only.

The third is the club district between Exit 9 and Sangsu Station. The big hip-hop and EDM clubs run from 11 pm to 5 am, entry 20,000-30,000 won, passport required (a few restrict foreign entry, so check Instagram first). For a quieter drink, Jebi Dabang (제비다방): 24 Wausan-ro, ★4.5 (522 reviews), 11:30 am-2 am. A cafe by day and a small live venue and bar by night, one of Hongdae’s old faces.

Finish at coin karaoke (500 won a song, 24 hours; Luxury Su Hongdae ★4.2, 180 reviews) or the ramyeon library. Events: the Free Market (Saturdays), the Seoul Silver Grass Festival (October) and the Hongdae street arts festival (Sept-Oct). Hongdae is crowded and safe late at night, but beware touts offering “free entry” and drunk crowds on the street. The last subway leaves just after midnight; after that, taxis or the N26 night bus.

Every Escape Room Theme in English? Play and Sports: Escape Rooms, ActiveMode, Self Photo Studios, Coin Karaoke

✔ The capital of how young Koreans play
Hongdae is the capital of how young Koreans play. Escape rooms are verified in our escape room article: Deep Thinker (딥띵커), ★5.0 (838 reviews), runs every theme in English; Seoul Escape Room Hongdae 2 is ★4.7 (614 reviews). 20,000-30,000 won per person, 60 minutes, booking recommended. ActiveMode Hongdae: B1, 19 Jandari-ro 2-gil, ★5.0 (703 reviews), 1-9 pm. Teams rotate through more than ten active games of reflexes and puzzles; 2-6 people, in the 20,000-won range per person, with English instructions.

Self photo studios number in the dozens: Life Four Cuts (4,000-5,000 won a session), Photoism, Haru Film; with hair and makeup, Oddity Mode (★5.0, 732 reviews). Coin karaoke costs 500 won a song, runs 24 hours and welcomes solo singers (Luxury Su ★4.2, 180 reviews; Awesome ★4.5, 73 reviews). PC bangs charge 1,000-1,500 won an hour; our PC bang and esports article lists Hongdae venues.

For sport, running in the Gyeongui Line Forest Park and cycling at Mangwon Hangang Park. Hongdae has almost no bowling alleys, and screen golf sits in a few buildings in Hapjeong and Sangsu. Most VR venues closed after 2022; as of 2026 what remains are active-game arenas of the ActiveMode type.

Hongdae’s Art in One Building! Art and Design: Sangsang Madang, the Mural Street, the Indie Music Venues, the Book Street

✔ Hongdae’s art in one building
KT&G Sangsang Madang (상상마당): 65 Eoulmadang-ro, 7 min from Hongik Univ. Station Exit 9. ★4.1 (2,628 reviews), 11 am-9 pm. A cultural complex opened in 2007: a second-floor gallery (free to 5,000 won), an independent cinema, a Korean designer goods shop on the ground floor and a live hall in the basement. It’s Hongdae’s art in one building.

The Hongik mural street (the slope left of the main gate) and the street art of the Walking Street. Hongik is Korea’s largest art university, and its graduation shows in November-December are free and open to the public. The Gyeongui Line Book Street (책거리) (★4.4, 486 reviews) is a row of train-shaped bookshops where you can handle the books of Korean independent publishers. Small independent galleries dot Yeonnam-dong; following shows on Instagram is the Hongdae way.

Music is Hongdae’s biggest art. Club FF, Unplugged, Jebi Dabang, the Sangsang Madang live hall: many of Korea’s indie bands started here. Busking runs Friday and Saturday nights, tips are optional, and a word to the performer before filming is expected. With the pop-ups of our Seongsu guide and the DDP of our Dongdaemun guide, this is the third point of Seoul’s “art now” triangle.
