The District That Never Stops, Cut Into 9 Themes! Dongdaemun Area Guide—Gwangjang Market Since 1905, Wholesale Towers 8 pm–5 am, DDP, and the Naksan Wall Free 24 Hours

In three lines

  • Dongdaemun works off four stations: Dongdaemun History and Culture Park (Lines 2/4/5) Exit 1 for DDP, Dongdaemun (Lines 1/4) Exits 6-7 for Heunginjimun and Exit 9 for the dakhanmari alley, Jongno 5-ga (Line 1) Exits 7-8 for Gwangjang Market, and Dongmyo (Lines 1/6) Exit 3 for the flea market.
  • The essentials: Gwangjang Market (★4.2, 44,280 reviews, food alley daily 9 am-10:30 pm), DDP (★4.4, 31,955, 10 am-8 pm), Naksan Park (★4.6, 6,117, free, 24 hours), Heunginjimun (★4.4, 7,908). Bindaetteok costs 5,000-6,000 won, a whole-chicken dakhanmari around 30,000 won.
  • A district that runs at night: the wholesale towers work 8 pm-5 am, Doota until midnight, Migliore until 2 am. The 24-hour sauna is Sparex (★4.0). On Sunday the Gwangjang shops and Dongdaemun Comprehensive Market close, and the Dongmyo flea market is biggest on weekends.

Who this is for

  • Anyone who thinks Dongdaemun is just night shopping
  • People who want the numbers on which Gwangjang stall to eat at, and what to order
  • Anyone with hours to kill before a night bus or an early flight, in a district that never closes

Dongdaemun is the part of Seoul where time moves differently. Mornings belong to the side-dish stalls of Gwangjang Market and the herb dealers of Gyeongdong Market; midday to the exhibitions at DDP and the fortress wall on Naksan; evenings to the mountains of second-hand clothes at Dongmyo; and from 8 pm to 5 am, shop owners from all over Korea come to the wholesale towers to stock up. A 24-hour sauna and malls open until 2 am keep the district’s clock running.

The history is dense too. Gwangjang Market, opened in 1905, was Korea’s first permanent market; Heunginjimun, the East Gate, is National Treasure No. 1, rebuilt in 1869; the wall on Naksan is the 600-year-old Seoul City Wall. Next to them, in 2014, landed DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza), designed by Zaha Hadid. Tradition and the future sit five minutes apart on foot—that’s the district’s face.

“So where do I even start?” Here’s the thing: this guide cuts Dongdaemun and Gwangjang into nine themes (sights, food, shopping, beauty, wellness, nature and walks, nightlife, play, art) and lists only places whose address, hours and rating we verified on Google Maps. The market restaurants score modestly (3.8-4.2), because the busiest tourist spots draw the most divided reviews. You get the numbers and how to choose. Let’s get into it.

National Treasure No. 1 to Zaha Hadid in Five Minutes! Sights and History: Heunginjimun, Gwangjang Market, DDP and the Igansumun Sluice Gate

✔ The only great gate with a barbican
Heunginjimun (흥인지문, the East Gate): 288 Jongno, Jongno-gu, right at Dongdaemun Station Exits 6-7. ★4.4 (7,908 reviews), exterior only, free, 24 hours. It’s the eastern gate of the Seoul City Wall, rebuilt in 1869, and the only one of the four great gates with a semicircular barbican in front. From Heunginjimun Park on the north side (★4.4, 1,082 reviews) the wall begins its climb up Naksan. It’s lit at night, and the footbridge on the station side is the classic angle.

Gwangjang Market (광장시장): 88 Cheonggyecheon-ro, Jongno-gu, at Jongno 5-ga Station Exits 7-8. ★4.2 (44,280 reviews). Korea’s first permanent market, opened in 1905; the crossing of the east-west aisles is the food alley, surrounded by shops selling silk, hanbok and bedding. The food alley runs daily 9 am-10:30 pm; the shops close Sunday. The second-floor vintage clothing section is popular with young visitors from Japan and Taiwan. Since June 2026, Jongno-gu’s vendor registration system has brought consistent price labeling.

DDP (Dongdaemun Design Plaza): 281 Euljiro, Jung-gu, connected to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station Exit 1. ★4.4 (31,955 reviews), 10 am-8 pm (varies by exhibition). Designed by Zaha Hadid and opened in 2014, one of the world’s largest free-form buildings; the Joseon-era sluice gate Igansumun (이간수문) and a stretch of the city wall unearthed during construction are preserved on the grounds. The Dongdaemun History Museum (free) and the rooftop lawn are free to enter. If you only want to see the exterior, go at night.

Bindaetteok for 6,000 Won a Piece! Food: Bindaetteok, Yukhoe, Mayak Gimbap, Whole-Chicken Dakhanmari, Gyeongdong Herbs

✔ Modest stars, consistent food
The Gwangjang food alley: mung-bean bindaetteok at Wonjo Sunhuine Bindaetteok (원조순희네빈대떡), ★4.0 (1,726 reviews), is 6,000 won a piece, 5,000 elsewhere. Parkgane Bindaetteok ★3.9 (1,154 reviews). For yukhoe (raw beef), Tongkeun Nuine Yukhoe Bindaetteok ★4.2 (923 reviews) and, in the yukhoe alley on the market’s east side, Miok (미옥) ★4.9 (269 reviews). Mayak gimbap (mini rice rolls) at Monyeo Gimbap (모녀김밥) ★3.8 (569 reviews), 9 am-9 pm. Here’s the thing about the 3.8-4.2 ratings: they reflect arguments about lines, shared tables and prices; the food itself is consistent. Our traditional-market street food tour article has a detailed route.

The dakhanmari alley: 3 min from Dongdaemun Station Exit 9, on Jongno 40ga-gil. Jinokhwa Halmae Wonjo Dakhanmari (진옥화할매원조닭한마리), ★4.0 (8,421 reviews), 10:30 am-1 am. A whole chicken simmered at the table for around 30,000 won, enough for 2-3 people; mix your own sauce from soy, chili paste and mustard, and finish with noodles. Open until 1 am, so it works after the wholesale towers.

Gyeongdong Market (경동시장): 3 Gosanja-ro 36-gil, Dongdaemun-gu, 3 min from Jegi-dong Station Exit 2. ★4.1 (11,050 reviews), 9 am-6 pm. Korea’s largest herbal-medicine market (Seoul Yangnyeongsi), wholesaling ginseng, jujubes, cinnamon bark and mugwort. Starbucks Gyeongdong 1960, in a converted old cinema inside the market, has become the stop everyone makes. Three subway stops from Dongdaemun; mornings are the lively hours.

Closed on Sundays? Shopping: The Wholesale Night, Doota, Dongmyo Vintage, Fabrics at the Comprehensive Market

✔ The one building that shops like a department store
Doota Mall (두타몰): 275 Jangchungdan-ro, Jung-gu, at Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Exit 14 or Dongdaemun Station Exit 8. ★4.5 (2,273 reviews), 10:30 am-midnight. It’s the one retail building in Dongdaemun that shops like a department store: Korean designer brands, a tax-refund counter, a food court. Migliore Dongdaemun (263 Jangchungdan-ro, ★3.8, 3,236 reviews, 10:30 am-2 am, closed Monday) is haggling retail; Lotte FITIN Dongdaemun (264 Euljiro, ★4.0, 2,454 reviews) is the youth fashion mall opposite DDP.

The wholesale towers (apM, Designer Club, Nuzzon and others) run from 8 pm to 5 am and serve shop owners from across the country. Many stalls do not sell retail, so ask “somae?” (retail?) before browsing. Dongdaemun Comprehensive Market (동대문종합시장): 266 Jongno, Jongno-gu, Dongdaemun Station Exit 8. ★4.2 (2,428 reviews), 5,000 shops of fabric, buttons, lace and hanbok materials. Closed Sunday, weekdays 8 am-6 pm. Heaven for anyone who sews.

Dongmyo Flea Market (동묘벼룩시장): 102-8 Sungin-dong, Jongno-gu, at Dongmyo Station Exit 3. ★4.0 (5,234 reviews), 9 am-8 pm, biggest on weekends. Used clothes piled high from 1,000 won a piece, plus retro jackets, records and antiques. Seoul Folk Flea Market (서울풍물시장): 21 Cheonho-daero 4-gil, Sinseol-dong, ★3.9 (4,879 reviews), 10 am-7 pm, closed Tuesday. An indoor antiques and old-goods market, good for rainy days. Nail Mall Dongdaemun (★4.3, 319 reviews) is a nail-supply wholesaler on the edge of the Jongno 5-ga beauty-supply street.

Buy Where the Salons Buy! Beauty and K-Care: The Herbal Medicine District, Beauty-Supply Wholesalers, Clinics in Myeongdong

✔ Materials, not treatments
“Beauty” in Dongdaemun is about materials rather than treatments. The beauty-supply street from Jongno 5-ga to Dongdaemun lines up wholesalers of hair care, nail products and salon equipment—this is where Korea’s salons buy their stock. Nail Mall Dongdaemun (네일몰 동대문점), ★4.3 (319 reviews), has one of the country’s largest ranges of gel polish and nail tips, and sells to walk-in customers. Professional hair irons and scissors go at wholesale prices too.

Gyeongdong Market (Seoul Yangnyeongsi) is the home of herbal K-care: ginseng (six-year roots from several hundred thousand won per kilo), ingredients for ssanghwa-tang, jujubes and mugwort for herbal steaming at wholesale prices, and shops will decoct them for you. The Seoul K-Medi Center inside the market (free) offers constitution diagnosis and foot baths (check closing days). See also our article on Korean medicine clinics.

Dermatology clinics, hair salons and large cosmetics stores are scarce in Dongdaemun; they cluster in Myeongdong, two stops on Line 2 (see our Myeongdong and Namdaemun area guide). Doota and Lotte FITIN have Olive Young and cosmetics floors with instant tax refunds. If you are staying in Dongdaemun: treatments in Myeongdong or Gangnam, supplies here.

Before a Night Bus or After? Wellness: The 24-Hour Sparex, a Fortress-Wall Walk, Herbal Tea at Gyeongdong

✔ The most convenient 24-hour jjimjilbang in central Seoul
24-hour Sparex Good Morning City (스파렉스): B3, Good Morning City, 247 Jangchungdan-ro, Jung-gu, connected to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station Exit 14. ★4.0 (1,678 reviews), open 24 hours, entry 12,000-15,000 won depending on the time. It’s the most convenient 24-hour jjimjilbang in central Seoul, before or after a night bus, an early flight or night shopping: hanjeungmak kiln saunas, a salt sauna, sleeping rooms, a canteen. How it works is in our “Jjimjilbang full course” article.

Walking the Naksan section of the Seoul City Wall: the 2.1 km climb along the wall from Heunginjimun Park (Dongdaemun Station Exit 6) to Naksan Park is the easiest fortress walk in Seoul. Paved, lit, open 24 hours, so it works at night too. About 40 minutes; from Naksan Park (★4.6, 6,117 reviews) descend to Hyehwamun gate and you are in Daehangno. From 6 to 8 am it belongs to runners and dog walkers.

The herb shops of Gyeongdong Market will brew ssanghwa, jujube and ginger tea ingredients on the spot. For travel fatigue, ssanghwa-tang (쌍화탕, 3,000-5,000 won a cup). Rest at Starbucks Gyeongdong 1960 or the youth mall inside the market. Drop-in yoga and Pilates are almost nonexistent in Dongdaemun; use a hotel gym or head to the Han River.

All of Eastern Seoul From a 125 m Hill! Nature and Walks: Naksan Park, Ihwa Mural Village, the East End of Cheonggyecheon

✔ Climb late, wait for the night view
Naksan Park (낙산공원): 41 Naksan-gil, Jongno-gu, 15 min from Hyehwa Station Exit 2 or 40 min from Dongdaemun Station along the wall. ★4.6 (6,117 reviews), free, 24 hours. A 125 m hill whose wall-top path looks over eastern Seoul, from Dongdaemun to Namsan and Bukhansan. Plenty of people climb in the late afternoon and wait for the night view, so at weekend sunsets the wall gets crowded. There’s a kiosk and toilets at the top.

Ihwa Mural Village (이화동 벽화마을): 49 Naksan 4-gil, Jongno-gu, just below Naksan Park. ★4.1 (4,816 reviews). Born of a 2006 public-art project, but noise from visitors led to conflict with residents, and in 2016 some murals, including the famous flower and fish stairways, were painted over by residents. The remaining murals can be walked, but this is a residential area: keep quiet and do not point cameras at front doors. A few cafes and small galleries.

Cheonggyecheon (Dongdaemun section) runs from Ogansugyo bridge past Gwangjang Market to Dongdaemun, the end of the 1.6 km walk from Cheonggye Plaza (see the Euljiro guide). East of here you can keep following the stream to the Cheonggyecheon Museum and Yeocheon Market. In November-December the whole stream becomes a lantern venue. The lawn of Heunginjimun Park (★4.4, 1,082 reviews) is a free place to rest under the wall.

The Night Has Three Layers! Nightlife and Events: The Wholesale Night, DDP Lights, the Naksan View, a Wine Bar

✔ Dongdaemun’s night has three layers
Dongdaemun’s night has three layers. The first is night shopping in the wholesale towers (8 pm-5 am), Doota (to midnight) and Migliore (to 2 am). The second is the DDP at night, its curved walls lit up, plus the free Seoul Light DDP facade projections in spring and winter (2026 dates on the official site). The third is the night view from Naksan Park (24 hours, free), looking down on the Dongdaemun towers from the wall.

For a drink, Jean Frigo (장프리고): 9-8 Toegye-ro 62-gil, Jung-gu, 5 min from Dongdaemun History and Culture Park Station. ★4.8 (1,363 reviews), 6 pm-1:30 am, closed Monday. A hidden natural-wine bar entered through a refrigerator door, one of the origins of Korea’s wine-bar boom; reservations via Instagram. Dongmyo Market (동묘마케트): 17-10 Jongno 54-gil, ★4.6 (112 reviews), 5:30 pm-midnight (Fri-Sat to 1:30 am). A retro bar inside the Dongmyo vintage streets, for after the flea market.

Finish at the dakhanmari alley (to 1 am) or Gwangjang Market (to 10:30 pm). For a late shower and a nap, Sparex (24 hours). Events: besides Seoul Light DDP, the DDP design exhibitions in October and the Cheonggyecheon lanterns in December. Dongdaemun’s nights are full of delivery scooters and carts and the sidewalks are narrow, so take care. Safety is good.

Treasure in a 1,000-Won Pile? Play and Sports: Vintage Hunting, Making Clothes From Fabric, a Night Walk on the Wall

✔ Here, play is the shopping itself
In Dongdaemun, “play” is the shopping itself. Digging through mountains of 1,000-won clothes at Dongmyo Flea Market is a weekend pastime for young Koreans; Saturday and Sunday afternoons are busiest, haggling is expected, cash is handy. The second-floor vintage section of Gwangjang Market sells curated pieces (10,000-30,000 won each), which is the easier place to start.

Buying fabric and buttons at Dongdaemun Comprehensive Market and having a garment made at a nearby tailor is a “made-to-order experience” that works for hanbok (see our hanbok and palace night-opening article) as well as everyday clothes: one to two weeks to finish, and some shops ship overseas. The DDP Design Store and DDP Market carry Korean designer goods.

For sport, the night walk on the Naksan wall (Heunginjimun to Naksan to Hyehwamun, about an hour) and picnics on the DDP rooftop lawn. Escape rooms, PC bangs and screen golf are scarce in Dongdaemun; Wangsimni (two stops on Line 2) and Konkuk University are the nearest options. See our escape room and PC bang articles.

The Building Is the Exhibit! Art and Design: DDP Exhibitions, the Dongdaemun History Museum, the Mural Village, Antiques at the Folk Market

✔ The building itself is the exhibit
DDP is the center of art in Dongdaemun. The special exhibitions in the museum building (15,000-25,000 won, depending on the show) are often major international design and photography shows; the Design Lab and Design Store are free. The building itself is the exhibit: 45,133 aluminum panels form a seamless curved facade. The Dongdaemun History Museum (inside DDP, free) shows Joseon-era finds and the wall unearthed during construction, and the Igansumun sluice gate is outdoors.

Ihwa Mural Village makes you think about how art and residents coexist: you can see both the murals that remain and the traces of those painted over. The second floor of the Seoul Folk Flea Market (★3.9, 4,879 reviews) is lined with antiques, old signboards and records, and draws photographers (a word to the shopkeeper first). Dongmyo (the Eastern Shrine, free), at the heart of the flea market, is a 1602 shrine to the Chinese general Guan Yu, rare for its Chinese-style architecture.

For design, the Korean-designer floors of Doota and the DDP illuminations. Dongdaemun is a district of makers, and walking its supply streets of fabric, buttons, beauty products and herbs is a design lesson in itself. Do not block the market aisles for photos, and do not get in the way of traders during the wholesale hours at night.
