Gyeongbokgung shows its night face only twice a year: the spring and autumn special night openings, a few weeks when the palace is floodlit and Geunjeongjeon and Gyeonghoeru float against the dark.

And every year, the night opening is famous for one thing: being sold out by the time you hear about it. Online slots evaporate after the announcement, and travelers who show up hoping for door tickets turn back at the gate.

This article hands you the stance in advance. Autumn dates customarily drop around September — the moment they do, they will appear here.

1. The mechanics, read from the spring session

The key is not missing the announcement. Consider this article your watchtower.

The spring 2026 session (13 May–14 June) sketches the autumn outline: viewing 19:00–21:30 (last entry 20:30), ₩3,000, booked via Interpark up to one day before the visit. Daily quotas are tight and weekends fill first. Some years add a separate foreigner allocation — check the notice when it lands.

And the perennial headline: hanbok wearers have customarily entered the night opening free. Some rental shops from our hanbok guide operate into the evening.

2. What the night shows you

Two protagonists. Geunjeongjeon, the throne hall, sheds its daytime-attraction face under floodlights and recovers the face of a royal court. And Gyeonghoeru — the pavilion’s reflection in its pond is the photographic centerpiece of the whole event. The route is restricted compared with daytime, and the restriction concentrates the experience rather than diluting it.

One photography rule: go straight to Gyeonghoeru in the blue hour right after entry (early 19:00s). A pavilion under a still-blue sky beats full darkness by several grades — the same principle as our night timetable.

3. Plan B, if the tickets are gone

A sold-out night opening does not end palace nights. Deoksugung opens until 9 p.m. year-round (closed Mondays) — the standing night palace, paired beautifully with its stone-wall road. Changdeokgung’s Moonlight Tour is a separate reservable night program with more sessions. And Gwanghwamun Square serves the floodlit gate for free. The palace district at night survives any sellout.

So the takeaway is one line: watch for the September announcement. When a date appears in this article, that is your starting gun.

Frequently asked questions

When do autumn dates come out?

Customarily around September via the Korea Heritage Service and palace channels. This article adds the dates and booking link when they land.

Can I enter without a reservation?

The night opening is reservation-first. Some years offer day-of or foreigner quotas, but the online booking is the only certainty.

Is booking possible in English?

The booking site has an English version — selling out at the same speed. Acting on announcement day matters more than language.

Is it fine with children?

Yes, though parts of the route are dark — carrying beats strollers.

Are photos allowed?

Personal photography is free; tripods may be restricted. Night mode beats flash by a wide margin.
