For 25 Minutes From 1:10 pm, No Plane in Korea Takes Off or Lands! November 19, 2026 Is Suneung Day—Offices Open at 10, the Subway Adds Trains From 6 am, and Here Is How a Traveler Gets Through the Day [Pending Official Details]

In three lines

  • Thursday, November 19, 2026 is Suneung (수능), Korea’s national college entrance exam. It runs from 8:40 am to 5:45 pm, and last time 554,174 students sat it at 1,310 exam sites nationwide. For one day the whole country moves on the students’ schedule.
  • What matters most to travelers is flights. Last time, aircraft and helicopter takeoffs and landings were restricted at every airport in the country from 1:10 to 1:35 pm, during the English listening section. Flights at Incheon and Gimpo around that window get shifted, so leave slack in connections.
  • In the morning, offices and companies were asked to start at 10 am or later, the subway ran extra trains from 6:00 to 8:10 am, and vehicles were stopped 200 m from exam sites. From 1:10 to 1:35 pm buses and trains slow down and do not sound horns. Keep quiet near schools, and everything else about your day works as normal.
Suneung exam day 2026: traveler guide

Who this is for

  • You are flying to Korea around November 19, 2026
  • You heard that planes stop on Suneung day and want to know whether it is true
  • You will be in Seoul that day and want to know about the morning commute and etiquette near schools

There is one day in November when the rhythm of the entire country changes. It is Suneung (수능), the national college entrance exam, and in 2026 it falls on Thursday, November 19.

Planes really do stop flying for a while. To keep the English listening section silent, takeoffs and landings were halted at every airport in Korea for 25 minutes, from 1:10 to 1:35 pm, last time. Government offices and companies pushed their start time to 10 am or later, and the morning subway added trains with students given priority.

And yet there is very little here that inconveniences a traveler. Sights and shops open as usual. You only need to know three things: the flight window, the morning commute, and keeping quiet near schools.

This guide uses last year’s government measures (November 13, 2025) as the template and walks through November 19, 2026 hour by hour. The 2026 measures are usually announced in late October, so treat this as the pending version, to be updated the moment they are out!

The Day the Whole Country Adjusts to Its Students! What Suneung Is, and the November 19, 2026 Timetable

✔ 8:40 am to 5:45 pm, half a million students on the same paper
Suneung is Korea’s national college entrance exam, held once a year on a Thursday in November, nationwide and simultaneously. The exam for the 2027 academic year falls on Thursday, November 19, 2026. Last time (November 13, 2025), 554,174 students sat it at 1,310 sites across 85 districts. It starts at 8:40 am, and students taking the optional final subjects finish at 5:45 pm.

What makes it unusual is that the state mobilizes to make sure students arrive on time and sit the exam in silence. In late October the Ministry of Education reports a support package to the cabinet, and in one go it settles staggered office hours, extra public transport, aircraft restrictions and a pause in military drills. Nothing on that scale happens for entrance exams elsewhere.

From a traveler’s point of view, it is a November weekday on which the city’s rhythm shifts twice, once in the morning and once in the early afternoon. Below, flights, the morning commute and etiquette, using last year’s measures as the numbers.

Government measures on Suneung day (last time, November 13, 2025) and what they mean for travelers
Window Measure (last time) Effect on travelers
6:00 to 8:10 Extra subway trains (students’ travel window), emergency transport on standby Move after 8:30. Trains are full of students and families
8:10 to 8:40 No vehicles within 200 m of exam sites, room entry closes 8:10, exam starts 8:40 Taxis detour around schools. Keep quiet nearby
10:00 onward Offices and companies asked to start at 10 am or later Commuter peak shifts to 9 to 10
1:10 to 1:35 pm Aircraft and helicopter takeoffs and landings restricted, military drills paused, buses and trains slow with no horns Flights at Incheon and Gimpo in this window get shifted. Leave slack for connections

✔ Getting from the airport matters more on this day If your flight gets shifted, the 『Incheon Airport to Seoul guide』 compares the train, bus and taxi with their 18x price gap, so a late arrival does not turn into a scramble.

No Flights From 1:10 to 1:35 pm! What It Means for Incheon and Gimpo, and How to Book Around It

✔ Takeoffs and landings restricted nationwide for the 25-minute listening section
Under last year’s measures, aircraft and helicopter takeoffs and landings were restricted from 1:10 to 1:35 pm, the English listening section of the third period. The point is silence over exam sites, and it applies to every airport in the country, Incheon and Gimpo included. Military training and artillery fire pause for the same window.

For travelers, the effect is that flights around that window get shifted. Arrivals and departures near 1 pm can be delayed by tens of minutes waiting to land or take off. If you are landing in Korea on November 19, do not book a same-day connection or anything with a fixed time straight after the airport, such as a tour meeting point or a show.

Outside that window, everything runs normally. A morning arrival with the afternoon in the city, or an evening departure, works fine, so there is no need to avoid the date. Airlines adjust and notify schedules in advance; just do not miss the schedule-change email for your booking.

Offices Open at 10, the Subway Adds Trains From 6! The Morning Commute and the 200 m No-Car Zone

✔ 6:00 to 8:10 am belongs to the students. Travelers, move after 8:30
Last year, offices and companies were asked to start at 10 am or later so that students would not be late, and the subway ran extra trains from 6:00 to 8:10 am, the students’ travel window. Entry to exam rooms closes at 8:10 am, so trains in that window fill with students and the family members seeing them off. The smart move for a traveler is to shift the morning journey to after 8:30.

The other quirk of the day is that rush hour moves to around 10. The usual 8 to 9 window empties out and 9 to 10 gets busy. If you want an early start on sightseeing, leaving between 8:30 and 9 puts you between the two peaks.

Watch out in taxis for the no-vehicle zone starting 200 m from exam sites, typically high schools. Students get out and walk the rest, and surrounding roads are closed or diverted in the morning. If there is a school near your hotel, expect the morning taxi to take a slightly longer route. Emergency vehicles and police escorts for students have priority.

Keep It Quiet Near Schools! Traveler Etiquette, and the Scenes You Only See on This Day

✔ No horns from 1:10 to 1:35 pm. Lower your voice near schools
Under last year’s measures, buses and trains slowed near exam sites and did not sound horns during the 25-minute listening section. The same is asked of travelers: no loud conversation near schools, no music playing out loud, and that is all. Skip photos in front of exam-site gates too, since students end up in the frame.

There are scenes you only see on this day. Outside exam sites in the morning, younger students and families see the examinees off, and the classic gifts are yeot (엿, taffy) and chapssaltteok (찹쌀떡, glutinous rice cakes), because sticking means passing. Convenience stores and department-store food halls stock Suneung gift boxes of taffy and rice cake only in this season.

When the exam ends at 5:45 pm the mood of the city loosens all at once. Hongdae and Gangnam that night are livelier than a normal Thursday, full of newly freed students and their families. For a traveler it is a night to plan as usual. Sights, department stores and restaurants keep normal hours; essentially nothing closes for the exam.

The Day in One List! A November 19 Timetable, and What Is Still Pending

To recap, November 19 comes down to three points: the morning until 8:30 belongs to students, planes stop from 1:10 to 1:35 pm, and you keep quiet near schools. Beyond that it is an ordinary weekday. The list below is built on last year’s measures (November 13, 2025) and the numbers will be updated once the 2026 package is announced in late October.

  • The day before: check for schedule-change emails on flights around November 19. Do not book tight same-day connections or fixed-time plans
  • 6:00 to 8:10: extra subway trains with students given priority. Travelers move after 8:30
  • 8:40: the exam begins. No vehicles within 200 m of exam sites; keep quiet nearby
  • 9:00 to 10:00: with office starts pushed to 10 or later, this hour is the commuter peak
  • 1:10 to 1:35 pm: aircraft restrictions. In the city, no horns or loud voices near schools
  • 5:45 pm: the exam ends. Roads around exam sites get briefly congested. Evening as normal

Pending items: the 2026 office-hour adjustment, the extra subway and bus windows, and the exact aircraft restriction times. They are nearly identical year to year and will be reflected once announced.
