Donggyo-ro 12-gil, between Hapjeong and Hongdae. The neighbourhood is full of places to eat, but the queue outside this one looks different.

The name is Nanmyeonbang. Nanmyeon — written with the character for egg — means noodles made from a dough with egg in it. The sign, in effect, lists the ingredient.

Look at the menu and one noodle has been opened out in several directions: perilla oil and mortadella, hanwoo beef, soy milk noodles, a Pyongyang naengmyeon style, seolleongtang, omija.

What makes the place unusual is not that range but the balance. Whichever direction you take, the noodle never drifts from the centre.

The restaurant — Donggyo-ro 12-gil, closed on Tuesdays

The address is 16 Donggyo-ro 12-gil, 1st floor, Mapo-gu, Seoul, or Seogyo-dong 444-16 by lot number. It is on a lane between Hongik University Station and Hapjeong Station on Line 2, so you walk in. The phone number is listed as 0507-1487-0943 (DiningCode) or 010-9516-0934 (Google Maps).

Google Maps carries a Catch Table booking link, and the Michelin Guide website has a restaurant page for the place. Small noodle shops do not often turn up on lists like that.

Perilla oil egg noodles with mortadella, 14,000 won — the face of the place

Pink ham is laid in a ring around the rim of a black plate, with the noodles heaped up inside it. Chopped spring onion and black pepper go over the top, and a single egg yolk sits in the middle.

Mortadella is a ham from Bologna. Sliced thin it turns translucent, flecked through with grains of fat. It is not strongly salty, and the aroma is soft.

How to eat it is simple: break the yolk and mix everything through. The nutty aroma of perilla oil comes up first, the yolk coats the noodles, and the salt of the ham settles the seasoning from behind. Korean perilla oil makguksu and Italian carbonara meet on the same plate.

The noodles are an egg dough, so they are yellow and elastic. Lift them with chopsticks and they stretch rather than snap. That they do not break down while you mix is the character of the noodle here.

Sides and other directions — aubergine, ravioli, chilled egg noodles

The menu lists fried aubergine with ragu at 11,000 won. The aubergine plate that came to the table on this visit was fried aubergine topped with a white powder and spring onion, and since we cannot be certain it is the same item as the one with ragu, we leave it unnamed. The direction of the flavour was clear enough, though — crisp outside, melting within, with the salt coming down from above.

There was a bowl from the soup side as well: a clear broth with thinly shaved cucumber and meat, and something like white dumplings floating in it. The menu has tofu and shrimp ravioli at 10,000 won and chilled egg noodles in Pyongyang naengmyeon style at 14,000 won, and we will not pin it to either from a photograph alone.

The broth is gentle. Neither spicy nor salty, with the green note of the cucumber sitting on top of it. Eat the perilla oil noodles first and move to this bowl, and it clears the palate.

The menu in full runs: Seogyo egg noodles 13,000 won, hanwoo egg noodles 14,000 won, egg noodles in soy milk broth (vegan option) 13,000 won, hanwoo ox-head seolleongtang egg noodles 14,000 won, omija egg noodles 11,000 won, Gueom chicken egg noodles (weekday lunch) 11,000 won. On the side, Gueom chicken skin jelly, 4 pieces, 10,000 won, Berkshire K chilled pork 50g 6,000 won, oven-cooked pork 100g 18,000 won.

It sits on a lane between Hongik University Station and Hapjeong Station on Line 2, so you walk there. There are not many seats and the break runs two hours, which means an awkward hour in the afternoon is a wasted trip. Google Maps carries a Catch Table booking link.

The rating section is short this time. This site uses Google Maps ★4.5 with 100 or more reviews as its recommendation standard. As of September 2026, Seogyo Nanmyeonbang sits at ★4.9 with 465 reviews. That clears the standard by a wide margin.

Holding 4.9 across 465 reviews is rare. Averages usually slide as review counts climb. That the number holds means first-timers and regulars are rating it much the same.

This article has only three photographs, so it could not cover the whole menu. Still, if you take one dish, take the perilla oil egg noodles with mortadella at 14,000 won. What this place is trying to do is all there on that one plate.
