Count the Queue and the Bus Is Sometimes Quicker! Three Ways Up Namsan—Cable Car, Shuttle Bus, or a 30-to-40-Minute Walk, Compared Around the Sunset Crush

In three lines
  • The cable car is quick, but queues get long in the evening.
  • The bus is cheap and takes you most of the way up.
  • Walking takes 30 to 40 minutes and is the best of it in autumn.

Who this is for

  • Anyone aiming for a Namsan sunset who’d rather not miss it in a queue
  • People torn between the cable car, the bus and walking
  • Anyone who’d like to climb Namsan with views in autumn

There are three ways up the hill in the middle of Seoul: the cable car, a shuttle bus, or your own legs.

All three get you to the top. What differs is time, effort, and how long you wait.

“What if I’m going for the sunset?” Here’s the thing: around sunset the cable car queue grows considerably, so the wait has to be part of the calculation. Let’s get into it.

Minutes to Ride, but a Long Line! If You Take the Cable Car

✔ Once you’re on, it’s a matter of minutes
The speed isn’t in question.

The queue is. From late afternoon into the evening a line forms at the lower station, and around sunset it gets long.

Reaching that station involves a climb of its own. Use the lift where one is provided.

To avoid the crush, go more than an hour before sunset, or once it’s fully dark.

Ride Up, Walk Down! Bus and Walking

✔ The shuttle bus runs most of the way up
It’s cheap and takes a transport card. With a seat, it’s the easiest option going.

There are several walking routes: a gentle one following the road, and steeper stepped paths. The gentle route takes 30 to 40 minutes with views along the way.

The stepped route is shorter and harder, but it runs through trees and stays cool. In autumn, wet leaves make the steps slippery.

Riding up and walking down is the combination most people find best balanced.

Sunset Shifts Close to an Hour Between September and November! Timing

✔ The summit is busiest around sunset
The view is genuinely good then, and so is the crowd.

Daytime is quiet, and on a clear day you actually see further.

Going once it’s properly dark leaves you with city lights and fewer people.

Sunset moves earlier through autumn—close to an hour between September and November—so check the time before setting out.

Several Degrees Colder Than the City! Once You Are Up There

✔ You can see the view without paying to go inside
Besides the observation facility there are terraces and paths; plenty of it is free.

On windy days it feels much colder than the city, several degrees lower. Bring a jacket.

Food and drink are sold up there but cost more than at street level.

Check the time of the last service down. If you walk, avoid unlit paths and stick to the lit route.

And the summit isn’t the only destination. The paths around the mid-slopes are quiet, with viewpoints scattered along them. Worth an hour if you have it. Count the queue, then pick your way up.
