Yeon-dong, Jeju City. This is the middle of the Sin-Jeju commercial district, but the first thing you see standing outside is not the sign, it is the aging cabinet behind the glass door.

Open the door and a round yellow logo hangs on the wall: 明昊, Myeongho. Three horizontal lines run beneath it like charcoal smoke.

Manong is the Jeju word for garlic. Manong galbi means hanwoo short rib marinated with Daejeong garlic, a Jeju specialty.

The ++ on the menu is a grade mark. Original manong galbi++, hanwoo unmarinated short rib++, outside skirt++. More than the numbers, those two characters say what kind of place this is.

Step into the room and the glass aging cabinet is the first thing you see. Meat is stacked shelf by shelf with light falling from above. The layout shows anyone walking in what condition the beef is in before anything else.

Manong galbi 29,000 won — hanwoo marinated in garlic

Original manong galbi++ is 29,000 won. The description on DiningCode, translated as it stands, reads: hanwoo marinated short rib flavoured with a 54-year-old house marinade and Daejeong garlic, a Jeju specialty.

Daejeong in Jeju is known as garlic country. Putting that garlic into the marinade is where the dish name comes from, and it is what manong in the restaurant name means.

It is a marinated rib, but the colour is not black. That means soy sauce is not doing the heavy lifting, which is why the surface does not burn while it cooks. Garlic arrives first, with sweetness behind it.

Other lines on the menu are hanwoo too. Hanwoo unmarinated short rib++ 29,000 won, outside skirt++ 45,000 won. Go unmarinated for the short rib, or to the skirt if you want something with more chew.

Grilling — briefly, over charcoal

The grill runs on charcoal. Put the meat on and the fat drips, sending up one big cloud of smoke. The marinated rib changes colour in an instant, so do not look away.

Turn it as soon as one side firms up. The marinated cut is better not turned more than twice, because burnt garlic marinade leaves a bitter note.

When it is done the edges have set brown and the middle stays red. Eat one piece plain and the garlic comes first, with the sweetness of the beef itself rising as you chew.

The side dishes are restrained: dressed garlic scapes, kimchi, steamed egg and doenjang stew. Nothing flashy, nothing that gets in the way of the beef.

The finish — fried rice and noodles

Once the beef is gone you move on to rice or noodles. Fried rice arrives in a stone bowl with a yolk in the middle and seaweed scattered over. Mixed together, the rice turns red and the salt of the seaweed works through.

There are noodles as well. The menu lists pickled-vegetable noodles at 8,000 won. Broth goes into a wide bowl, then the noodles, then pickled vegetables and spring onion on top. The broth is cool and the salt is exact, which makes it easy to take after the beef.

Elsewhere on the menu are beef-bone doenjang stew 6,000 won, garlic curry in an earthenware pot 8,000 won and garlic yukhoe 25,000 won. From curry to yukhoe, the line of dishes with manong in the name keeps going.

It is in the Sin-Jeju Yeon-dong district, walkable from most places to stay. Busan Seomyeon Yang Gopchang and Geobu Galbi are in the same Yeon-dong, so the options for eating beef in Jeju City are gathered in one neighbourhood.

The rating note is short. This site uses ★4.5 on Google Maps with at least 100 reviews as its recommendation bar. As of September 2026, Myeongho Manong Galbi sits at ★4.7 with 735 reviews. That is well past the bar.

Not many grill houses in Jeju hold 4.7 across a sample of more than 700. It reads as the result of settling on one clear thing, a Daejeong garlic marinade, and keeping it for a long time.

The 1pm opening and the 15:30 to 17:00 break do fall awkwardly against most travel schedules. If this place is going into a Jeju itinerary, fit those two lines to the calendar first.
